Safety Tips for Operating Lifting Equipment on Industrial Sites

Lifting equipment cuts work time and physical effort, but carries real risk when handled without discipline. Here is practical, essential guidance for any site.

Before starting operation

• Visually inspect the machine before every shift: tires, brakes, warning lights, and any visible oil or hydraulic leaks.
• Confirm the operator is actually trained and certified for this specific type of equipment, not just “generally experienced.”
• Check the site ground: stability, slopes, and holes that could affect the machine’s balance, especially for vertical-lift equipment like scissor lifts.

During operation

• Never exceed the maximum load rating on the equipment’s data plate, even if the load looks “roughly light.”
• Keep a clear safety distance between lifting equipment and pedestrian workers, with separate walkways where possible.
• When working at height (man lift/scissor lift), always use the safety harness attached to the designated anchor point inside the basket — not any other point.
• Don’t operate in strong wind or bad weather if the model’s technical instructions prohibit it.

After finishing

• Return the equipment to a safe position (forks lowered for forklifts, platform fully lowered for scissor/man lifts) before shutting down.
• Log any technical note or minor fault the moment you notice it, not after it worsens.
