Crane Lift Safety: Lift Plan, Exclusion Zone, and Communication
A crane lift is a coordinated operation between the operator, the rigging team, and the site. Errors are rare but high-impact, so safety depends on planning before execution.
Before the lift
- A clear lift plan: load weight including rigging, working radius, height, and where the crane stands.
- Review the model load chart at the required radius and boom length.
- Ground that can bear the pressure under the outriggers, with spreader pads where needed.
- Check for power lines and obstacles in the boom path.
During the lift
- An exclusion zone around the crane and under the load; nobody passes under a suspended load.
- One person responsible for signaling the operator, using agreed signals.
- Tag lines to control load rotation instead of guiding it by hand.
Weather
- Wind especially affects loads with a large surface area; keep within the model limits.
