Man Lift & Boom Lift Basics for First-Time Users
Man lifts and boom lifts are among the most useful pieces of elevated-work equipment, but they require a basic understanding before first use to avoid common mistakes that can affect efficiency or safety.
Articulating vs telescopic
An articulating boom moves with more than one joint, allowing it to reach around obstacles and into complex angles. A telescopic boom extends in a more direct line, suited for reaching great heights in a straight path. Choosing the wrong type means either not reaching the required point or moving slower than necessary.
Understand the control panel before moving
Each model has a slightly different control panel layout. Don’t start actual operation without confirming the location of the emergency stop button and the height/rotation controls specific to this model.
Stabilize the base before lifting
Make sure the equipment is on level, stable ground, and use outriggers if available before raising the platform — lifting on unstable ground increases tip-over risk even within the permitted load.
Never exceed the allowed load or occupant count
Each model has a maximum combined limit for the number of people and tool weight allowed in the basket, not just the weight of the people — check the equipment’s data plate before boarding.
The safety harness is always mandatory
Clip the safety harness to the designated anchor point inside the basket for the entire duration of use, regardless of height, even if the task looks short or simple.
Bottom line
If you don’t have an operator trained specifically on this equipment type, Al-Fareed offers the option to rent the equipment with a trained operator, ensuring safe and correct operation from the first use.
