How to Choose the Right Forklift Size for Your Project
Choosing the wrong forklift size is one of the most costly mistakes in equipment rental — too small and it stalls under load, too large and you pay for capacity you never use.
1. Determine the actual maximum load weight
Don’t rely on rough estimates. Weigh the heaviest single item you will actually lift (not the average), then add at least a 10-15% safety margin so the forklift isn’t constantly working at its absolute limit, which accelerates wear and increases safety risk.
2. Consider lift height, not just weight
Rated capacity drops as fork height increases — a forklift rated for 5 tons may not lift 5 tons at high storage height. Always check the model’s load chart for capacity at your actual required height, not just the marketing number.
3. Diesel or electric?
Diesel suits outdoor work and large industrial sites needing higher lifting power and long continuous run times. Electric suits indoor work (warehouses, enclosed factories) thanks to lower noise and zero emissions, but requires charging time that must be planned into your work schedule.
4. Check your site before renting
Verify aisle width and the forklift’s turning radius against your actual site, especially in narrow-aisle warehouses or uneven construction-site ground.
Bottom line
At Al-Fareed Equipment Rental, we offer forklifts from 2 to 25 tons in both diesel and electric. If you’re unsure which size fits, contact us and we’ll help you pick the right capacity based on your project’s actual details, not guesswork.
